Whiskey doesn't have a posh pedigree like all the others on this site, however he was my first dog. He is labrador / collie cross.
I met Whiskey in 1995 at my local rescue centre, he was on death row and the next morning was going to be put to sleep. He had come from a local family whose idea of caring for him included locking him in a shed  and tying him up to be beaten. When Whiskey turned up at the rescue centre he was rehomed by them 3 times but each time was returned within 48 hours!!! I asked them to consider letting me adopt him but they refused saying he was out of control and I'd never be able to cope with him. I begged them to get him out and let me see him out on a lead. This they did, and all I saw was this beautiful creature, all be it a wild one. The kennel person could hardly hold him but when I took hold of his lead, Whiskey sat beside me, licking me madly. The kennel staff were amazed and agreed that providing I pass the home check-up I could have him on a weeks trial. Next morning I passed the check-up and raced to the kennels to collect MY dog. The week flew by and I was over the moon with him, that was 10 years ago and we are still together.
It has been hard at times, Whiskey has never gotten over the abuse he suffered for the first 2 years of his life. He had never been socialised and he was suspicious of everyone. Many a time he would growl and challenge me, almost daring me to correct him.
After a few months we saw a behaviourist who was very good and helped us to overcome some of the problems Whiskey had.
To me it didn't matter what problems Whiskey had, I loved him for who he was. The bond between us grew and we were constant companions.
Over the years Whiskey has mellowed, he loves teddies and squeaky toys and he loves Beth. He also loves to steal the hosepipe and runs around getting everyone wet!!! His favourite person in the world is Denise who can do anything with him.
Whiskey gets on with all the other dogs here and they know he is in charge, He loves to put the puppies in their place when they dare to jump all over him!!! and he loves to sneak a peek in the whelping box at any new puppies when he thinks no - one is watching!!!
Whiskey is now 12 years old, he's going deaf and blind and his legs are getting weak, however he still enjoys his walks along the river and does sometimes manage to get in for a swim.
Right from the start we connected and the bond between us is very strong.
Out of all the dogs here at Devonelite, Whiskey is easily the most rewarding one. Whiskey you are my hero XXX

He is your friend, your partner, your defender, your dog.
You are his life, his love, his leader.
He will be yours, faithful and true.
To the last beat of his heart.
You owe it to him to be worthy of such devotion.
