It is called Rainbow Bridge because of its many colours.
Just this side of rainbow bridge, there is a land of meadows, hills and valleys with lush green grass.
When a beloved pet dies, the pet goes to this place.
There is food and water and warm spring weather.
The old and frail animals are young again.
Those who are maimed are made whole again.
They play all day with each other.
There is one thing missing.
They are not with their special person who loved them on earth.
So, each day they run and play until the day comes when one suddenly stops playing and looks up!
The nose twitches!
The ears are up!
The eyes starring!
And this one suddenly runs from the group!
You have been seen,
And when you and your special friend meet,
You take him or her in your arms and embrace.
Your face is kissed again and again and again,
And you look once more into the eyes of your trusting pet.
Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together, NEVER again to be separated.

Whiskey aged 12 years with one of his beloved teddies.
July 1993 - October 2006
Whiskey doesn't have a posh pedigree like all the others on this site, however he was my first dog. He is labrador / collie cross.
I met Whiskey in 1995 at my local rescue centre, he was on death row and the next morning was going to be put to sleep. He had come from a local family whose idea of caring for him included locking him in a shed and tying him up to be beaten. When Whiskey turned up at the rescue centre he was rehomed by them 3 times but each time was returned within 48 hours!!! I asked them to consider letting me adopt him but they refused saying he was out of control and I'd never be able to cope with him. I begged them to get him out and let me see him out on a lead. This they did, and all I saw was this beautiful creature, all be it a wild one. The kennel person could hardly hold him but when I took hold of his lead, Whiskey sat beside me, licking me madly. The kennel staff were amazed and agreed that providing I pass the home check-up I could have him on a weeks trial. Next morning I passed the check-up and raced to the kennels to collect MY dog. The week flew by and I was over the moon with him.
It has been hard at times, Whiskey has never gotten over the abuse he suffered for the first 2 years of his life. He had never been socialised and he was suspicious of everyone. Many a time he would growl and challenge me, almost daring me to correct him.
After a few months we saw a behaviourist who was very good and helped us to overcome some of the problems Whiskey had.
To me it didn't matter what problems Whiskey had, I loved him for who he was. The bond between us grew and we were constant companions.
Over the years Whiskey mellowed, he loved teddies and squeaky toys and Beth was his best friend. He also loved to steal the hosepipe and run around getting everyone wet!!!
Whiskey got on with all the other dogs here and they knew he was in charge, He loved to put the puppies in their place when they dared to jump all over him!!! and he loved to sneak a peek in the whelping box at any new puppies when he thought no - one was watching!!!
Whiskey celebrated his 13th birthday in July 2006, he loved his new teddies and his toys and treats. He still wanted to go out with the other dogs but his legs were getting weak.
In August 2006 we all moved back to Plymouth (our home) where he was reunited with all his old friends and I took him back to his beloved Plymbridge his favourite walk (which I had always promised to do with him before he went), where he managed despite weak legs to stand in the water and try to jump around. I knew Whiskey had had enough but we did take that last trip to Plymbridge and for that I am grateful. That night he gave up almost as if he had just been waiting for us to take the trip to Plymbridge and see the river again.
Over the next few days we played and I made the most of every last minute, I knew that I had to have the courage to let my baby boy go.
The hardest decision of my life was made on Thursday 5th of October 2006.
Right from the start we connected and the bond between us is very strong.
Out of all the dogs here at Devonelite, Whiskey is easily the most rewarding one. Whiskey you are my hero XXX
He is your friend, your partner, your defender, your dog.
You are his life, his love, his leader.
He will be yours, faithful and true.
To the last beat of his heart.
You owe it to him to be worthy of such devotion.
